William J. Nies was born on August 27th, 1923 in Lancaster, PA.

William's father is William R. Nies.  His Mother is Anna M. Nies.

He completed the 8th grade at Sacred Heart.  He received training at Esbenshade's Cabinet Making Shop on Lafayette St. in Lancaster.  He received some additional basics while training in the military.

Bill was drafted into the US Navy and completed basic training at Bainbridge, PA. He was scheduled to receive submarine training but contracted Rheumatic Fever and was in the Naval Hospital in Dublin, GA for six months. The American Red Cross arranged a disability discharge.

During the depression, Bill went to camp to make roads for the government. He was paid $30 per month of which $22 was sent to his family. During the summers as a youth, he worked on a farm in Lancaster County; again his wages were sent home. He was a paper boy and sold Liberty Magazines as a child. He worked as a stock boy at Consolidated Cigar, a dock worker at Penn RR., and made shelves at Merchant Evens in 1940 & 1941. He then worked at the Armstrong Cork Co. from 1943. He was also a car dealer, a real estate investor and a coin collector.

Bill was an Altar Boy in the Catholic Church, played basketball at St. Mary's, and football at Sacred Heart. He enjoyed bowling and various other sports. He served the Greek Church for a number of years on the Church Coucil. He was a charter member of the Red Rose Coin Club.

Bill built a bungalow at Pequea. He built a number of things at the Greek Church, including a portable altar.

He married Sadie Mastros on January 10th, 1943.  William and Sadie had 2 children, Christina and William.

William J. Nies died on April 29th 1996 at the age of 72.  He was laid to rest at the Catholic Cemetery on Charles Road, Lancaster, PA.
